FALLING DOWN & PICKING UP THE PIECES
The pandemic has altered our connections and how we view an environment of order. This resulted in new work that explores our struggle for renewal, recovery, and improvement.
Throughout 2020 I created a series of small mixed-media sculptures. The name of this series, Falling Down, came from a New York Times interview with Faith Ringgold in which she said of her 1967 painting “American People Series #20: Die,” “I was just trying to read the times, and to me everyone was falling down,”. As it did then, I felt that once again this sentiment rang true.
In 2021 I wanted to make artwork that spoke to what we have experienced and the challenges that we face going forward. The small mixed-media sculptures in my Picking Up The Pieces series are created with materials left behind from the Falling Down series. Materials include furniture upholstery foam, electrical wire, food-grade cheesecloth, beeswax and damar resin.
