I am what is referred to as a "deferred artist”: someone passionate about art-making who pursued a different career earlier in life. I had done well in the corporate world, but I loved art and wanted to make a go of it. Adopting a robust and active studio practice, I utilized online and in-person experiences to explore and learn. It was during this time that I discovered encaustic. Initially I was drawn to the smooth glass-like surfaces that many artists create with this medium. Yet as I continued to work with encaustic, I found myself drawn to the textural and dimensional possibilities of wax.
As I moved ‘off the canvas’, my woven sculptural vessels became larger and more abstract in form. I introduced to my work a variety of materials including metal, fiber and paper creating wall and ceiling-hung sculptures. I was delighted to learn that viewers had different interactions with these new works than they did with the more traditionally displayed sculptures.
Many of my sculptural installation works are designed to be installed by someone other than myself. This results in a unique collaboration between myself and another artist putting their unique voice in the final design. I enjoy the surprise that awaits me as I see my work, in its new form, for the first time.
While I maintain my art practice, in 2014 I co-founded a social media marketing agency. Our clients include artists, art organizations, entrepreneurs, and nonprofits. As an artist and business woman, I am in a unique position to understand this relationship from both sides. As an experienced content marketer, I developed innovative art marketing solutions including the design of an interactive Virtual Art Gallery.
